Series 60 Iron Piston – Engine Service

November 28, 2000

Detroit Diesel Corporation is pleased to announce that we can now offer cost effective steel piston replacements when servicing failed units that have iron pistons. This only applies to engines that have cylinder blocks machined to accept the steel piston configuration.

DDC added piston cooling nozzle machining to all Series 60 cylinder blocks with unit number 6R-408505 on approximately 3/16/98. All 12.7L standard rated units remained iron until 6/1/99. Therefore, if the engine serial number is 6R-408505 or later, it can accept the steel piston configuration.

We recommend that steel pistons be used if you encounter an iron piston strut or saddle failure. Please note you will need additional parts to be compatible with the new steel piston. Reuse the cooling nozzle plug bolts for the cooling nozzles. Note that there is an associated cost increase for these components. Core material is to be handled under normal core return procedure.

This recommendation only applies to cases where a cylinder kit failure occurs. This is NOT a formal DDC Modification Program. In the event a single cylinder kit failure occurs, the remaining 5 cylinders should also receive steel pistons. Refer to section 1.17 of your Series 60 service manual for the proper installation procedure. The installation procedure for the oil spray nozzle can be found in section 1.1.

The cost of the upgrade will be covered by DDC only if the engines is within base warrant or extended service coverage. Table below shows the required hardware.
