FP Diesel: Caterpillar Induction Hardened Cylinder Liners

December 9, 2005

To improve performance under a variety of operating conditions, FP Diesel cylinder liners for Caterpillar engines are induction hardened on the inner diameter to the following specifications:

40 to 55 Rc

Case Depth 0.030″ to 0.070″

The induction hardening process starts approximately 0.25” from the top and ends 0.50” to 0.75” from the bottom of the liner. This process ensures that the entire surface area contacting the piston rings has increased durability and added scuff resistance.

The hardening process also makes the liner grow in size. By machining all the surfaces of the liner after induction hardening, Federal-Mogul ensures that the FP Diesel liner will hold the tighter final sleeve dimensions and precise flange area tolerances. The machining process also removes the “bluish” discoloration normally found after induction hardening the liners. The end result is a hardness specification and performance comparable to OE. This
machining process also results in a “machined finish” look to the liner unlike the dark, bluish/black dull finish of competitive product.

Federal-Mogul manufactures the FP Diesel brand of replacement Caterpillar liners using an exclusive low-carbon metallurgy to increase flange strength. The low-carbon liners are produced through an advanced static casting process resulting in an ultra-consistent microstructure. The consistency of the microstructure allows for better control of case depth and hardness. Each FP Diesel liner is fully CNC machined for optimum dimensional stability and plateau honed for faster ring seating and improved performance.

FP Diesel offers a complete range of cylinder liners and components for Caterpillar 3300, 3400, 3500 and D & G Series engines. Refer to catalog CA0010 for more information.
