2005 Dodge 3500 – Black Smoke, Lower Power & R/B Injectors in Cylinders 1 & 2

Shop Talk: Tech Tips from a Lifetime Under the Hood…

Mileage: 108,712

Problem:

Black smoke, lower power and has R/B injectors in Cylinders 1 and 2.

M&D:

While in the shop revving the engine up and down, the engine caused heavy black smoke. The engine also did not sound normal and had a slight rough idle to it.

Note: Cylinders 1 & 2 had M&D Injectors.

Engine Balance Percentage:

  • #1 – 82%
  • #2 – 90%
  • #4 – 104%
  • #5 – 112%
  • #6 – 119%

When I ran the compression test on cylinders 1, 2, 3, and 4, they all showed 350 PSI.

Next, I had the injectors tested. Injectors 5 and 6 showed a very high return rate, however the injectors showed no cause of the black smoke. I then replaced the old injectors, resealed the 2 M&D injectors and reinstalled the resealed injectors in cylinders 1 and 2.

Engine Balance Percentage with 6 R/B M&D Injectors:

  • #1 – 92%
  • #2 – 100%
  • #4 – 102%
  • #5 – 102%
  • #6 – 100%

Note: May need to check the high percentage rates as much as low percentage rates. When in firing order, it may show the effects of the high cylinders on the low cylinders.

  • #1 – 82%
  • #5 – 112%
  • #3 – 90%
  • #6 – 119%
  • #2 – 88%
  • #4 – 104%
