These issues have lead to failures including but not limited to the actual top of the pistons separating from the base of the crowns. Federal-Mogul engineers redesigned the crown profile to improve under-crown cooling and made significant changes to both the rib structure and material properties resulting in an all new replacement piston. These improvements minimize unwanted stress concentration, increase fatigue resistance and strength, resulting in improved performance and life.

Federal-Mogul aftermarket engineers developed the FP Diesel Series 60 Crosshead piston crown utilizing computer-aided predictive engineering to achieve a combination of improved materials and product design that will thrive in even the most brutal environment. Over 5000 hours of dynamometer testing — with test cycles exerting maximum stress on the piston, exceeding normal operating conditions — have proven that the new FP Diesel Crosshead replacement piston crowns resolve the quality concerns of other prior designs.
All FP Diesel pistons are designed using the latest in computer aided design (CAD); computer aided engineering (CAE) technology and thoroughly researched to ensure the proper dimensional and metallurgical requirements. When installed with FP Diesel cylinder liners and piston rings, these components develop optimum performance as part of the “power-cylinder” system.
